The Perfect Churro

What are the features of a perfect Churro? To start with, the dough must be just the right texture, fried to a satisfying crisp without being greasy and slightly chewy in the center. Then, there’s the matter of the sugar and cinnamon. You should smell the warmth of the cinnamon before you bite into the characteristic ridges of the star-shaped pastry, a sensation that will be immediately followed by the crunchy sweet taste of the intact sugar crystals. Hungry yet? Would you dip your churro in chocolate? Or, coffee perhaps? Maybe you prefer your churros stuffed in the center with a sweet filling. Regardless of your favorite way to eat a churro, you are undoubtedly on the hunt for the best local delicacy in your neck of the woods.

A Debated History but a Fan Favorite

While it’s not clear in exactly which country the churro was invented (several claim ownership), it is today a favorite among the Spanish, Portuguese, Latin Americans, and certain communities within in the U.S. And, if you didn’t grow up eating them as part of your cultural identity, you have certainly encountered them, along with other sweet and savory treats, sold from stands at carnivals, street fairs, pop-up food truck roundups, and even sporting events.

Churros Near Me?

So, who wins the local churro challenge? Well, that depends on where you call home. California is a big state with a big appetite for Churros. Las Angeles, San Diego and Hollywood all boast lists of bakeries, restaurants and food trucks vying for your good opinion. Or look to Arizona and Texas, the only two states in the U.S. that are home to a city designated as a Creative City of Gastronomy by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). With significantly long food histories, Tucson and San Antonio may be the perfects spots to sink your teeth into a life-changing churro. Of course, if you live on the other side of the country, Washington D.C. has a popular Churro scene as well.

Best Churro in the U.S.

But seriously, who can claim the hands-down, best churro in America? Your answer may somewhat depend on whether your tastes run to the traditional or the adventurous. For example, Brian’s 24 in San Diego offers a dessert called “Tot-Churros” which are as they sound, tater tot shaped churros piled high with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce on top. By contrast, in Tucson, you could stop by El Charro, a local eatery that dates back to 1922 and sample their Sopapillas, Churros y Chocolate on one of their patios for a more casual, unchanged-by-time vibe. Or, hit up Honchos Churros in San Antonio, where you can visit their storefront, or hire their food truck, and sample both traditional and not so traditional sauces – grape jelly and peanut butter anyone?

Regardless of whether you are looking for something classic or reinvented, dipped or filled, the perfect churro should be just the right combination of crunch and chew, cinnamon and sugar, taste and texture.

Haitian Food Specialties

Haiti is a small country in the Carribean that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. Despite its small size, it is home to over one million people, making it one of the most populous Carribean countries. Despite that, many people are unaware of the culture or society of Haiti. One of the most important ways that people share culture is through food, and Haitian food summarizes the culture of the country spectacularly. Many of these dishes bear similarities to other dishes that are more well-known throughout the Americas.

Diri ak djon djon

One of the key staples of Haitian food is Diri ak djon djon, or black rice. The name of the dish comes from the djon djon mushroom, a type of fungus that grows in the island country. The djon djon mushroom has become a key part of Haitian food and culture because of its taste and color. Although the stems are inedible, the caps of the mushrooms give the rice a black color and umami flavor. Black rice is often served as a side dish to the main meat course in a Haitian meal.

Griyo (Griot)

Giryo, or griot, is often the main meat dish that is accompanied by diri ak djon djon. This Haitian food staple is pork that is generally boiled before being fried. The initial cooking softens the pork, while the frying creates a crispy layer on the outside of the meat. This combination of a crispy outer layer and a soft, succulent center creates a mouth-water dish that is loved by all.

Bannann Peze

Most Central and South American countries have a take on the fried plantain dish. Bannann Peze is the Haitian culture in a fried plantain dish. Plantains are flattened before frying, usually twice in oil. The first fry of the plantain browns and cooks it, while the second fry adds to the crispy, carnival-like texture that is associated with fried foods.

Bulgur Wheat

Bulgur wheat is a type of grain that is made from whole-grain kernels of wheat. The kernels are often boiled for a short amount of time before they are dried. While bulgur wheat isn’t a dish, many different kinds of Haitian food use bulgur wheat as a main ingredient. Among these, the two that sum up Haitian culture the most are labouyi ble and kibi. Labouyi Ble is a type of porridge made from bulgur wheat. The wheat is boiled before being blended with water and strained. It is then mixed with warm spices, like cinnamon, star anise, and nutmeg, then mixed with butter and served warm or cooled. Kibi, or kibbeh, is a type of Haitian food that bears a lot of similarities to Arabic culture and food. Derived from foods like samosas, kibi is generally made from meat, usually beef or lamb, and is mixed with onions and power spices. The spicy mixture is then stuffed into a shell, often made from bulgur wheat, and fried until it is crispy and served hot.

fresh or frozen fruit

Crush the banana with a fork and mix with yogurt, sugar, and honey. Put muffin baskets in a muffin mold and place 1 teaspoon of oatmeal at the bottom of each basket (you can use any other cereal you like instead of oatmeal).

Spread the yogurt mixture evenly over all the baskets and place the fruit you like – kiwi, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries on top.

Put the dessert mold in the freezer and let it cool for at least two hours. When the yogurt is icing, remove the muffin baskets and serve yourself a delicious iced dessert. Leave baskets at room temperature for 5-10 minutes before serving to thaw slightly.

2) Coffee froyo

If you enjoy coffee, this is the right way to combine the two things you love the most. Coffee ice cream is easy to make and has its own healthy variations depending on how sweet you want it to be, and you can use brown sugar or stevia powder.

a glass of soy milk

1.5 cups of instant coffee

1/4 cup brown sugar

half a teaspoon of vanilla extract if you have used neutral soy milk

To make sure how sweet it is, digest the mixture as you make it. The same goes for the amount of coffee you add, depending on how strong you want it to be. First, pour the soy cream or yogurt into a larger bowl, add the coffee and stir until the coffee is dissolved. Add the other ingredients and also whisk well until the sugar is melted and the mass is dense.

Then transfer to a cups or molds where you will leave them to ice.

When you want to consume it, leave it for 5 minutes at room temperature, then serve.

Tips for the start: In addition to the blender, it would be advisable to have a homemade mixer to make the yogurt as creamy as possible.

Once the base is made, various ingredients can be added to make frozen yogurt a delicious dessert. You can try different combinations of fruits and seeds and be creative as much as you want.

These healthy froyo ice cream variants can serve as a snack, breakfast or a real summer refreshment at any time.
